Rescue Professionals – Work Worth Doing

Remote and often inhospitable mountain environments are what dedicated rescue professionals call home. Search and rescue technicians, avalanche safety teams and ski patrol staff often face adverse conditions and are physically challenged while making rapid, life-saving decisions.

Since 2002, Arc’teryx has been quietly working with these professionals to aid efficiency and safety in their daily lives. Individuals who rely on their equipment provide critical feedback. The faster and more comfortable they are, the more immediate and effective their actions.

The evolution of skiing, lifestyle and pristine visuals draws increasing numbers of people into avalanche terrain. Fifteen deaths this year in the Pacific Northwest alone have revealed a critical need for more information on backcountry safety.

In its second season of filming, Snow Guardians is a collaborative effort by filmmakers to document the lives and work of ski patrol and search and rescue teams in the Rocky Mountains. Filmed largely in Montana, what is truly unique about this film is that it documents the everyday reality of working in snow: the dangers, discomfort, disadvantages and beauty.

An inspiring and compelling story and a necessary advance towards heightened awareness and understanding of risk management, this project brings to light the inexact nature of snow science and the challenges that are a daily part of life and work in breathtakingly beautiful, yet dangerous locations.

Arc’teryx is privileged to be a contributing partner to this project and to continue our efforts to develop equipment that may benefit the safety of others. Avalanche study and prediction is a guideline. Education, skills and shared experiences are the tools to prevent tragedy.
